Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Salon Furniture

Buying salon furniture is a big decision. Avoid these common mistakes that salon owners make and save yourself time, money, and headaches down the road.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Salon Furniture

Setting up or upgrading a salon is exciting, but it also involves some of the biggest purchasing decisions you will make as a business owner. Salon furniture is not cheap, and the wrong choice can cost you in more ways than just money — uncomfortable chairs drive away clients, poor-quality materials need early replacement, and the wrong layout wastes valuable space.

Here are the most common mistakes salon owners make when buying furniture, and how you can avoid them.

1. Buying Based on Price Alone

This is by far the most common mistake. It is tempting to go for the cheapest option, especially when you are setting up a new salon on a tight budget. But cheap furniture often means cheap materials, poor build quality, and a short lifespan.

A chair that costs half the price but lasts only one year is actually more expensive than a quality chair that lasts five years. Think about cost per year of use, not just the upfront price.

2. Ignoring Comfort for Looks

A chair can look absolutely stunning in a catalogue or showroom but feel terrible to sit in for an hour. Always test the furniture before buying. Sit in the chair yourself. Try the recline mechanism. Check the cushion firmness. Feel the armrest height.

Remember — your clients will sit in these chairs for extended periods. If they are not comfortable, they will not return, no matter how good your services are.

3. Not Measuring the Space First

It sounds obvious, but many salon owners buy furniture without properly measuring their salon space. That oversized styling station that looked perfect online might block walkways or crowd other stations when placed in your actual salon.

Before buying anything, create a floor plan. Measure every inch of your space. Leave enough room for client movement, staff workflow, and emergency exits.

4. Overlooking Durability and Material Quality

Salon furniture takes a beating every day — hair dye spills, chemical splashes, constant movement, and heavy use. Materials matter enormously.

  • Upholstery: Go for high-grade PU leather or commercial-grade vinyl. Regular fabric or thin PVC cracks and peels within months.
  • Frame: Steel or cast iron frames last much longer than aluminium or plastic alternatives.
  • Hydraulics: Check the weight rating and brand of the hydraulic pump. A weak pump will fail within the first year.

5. Forgetting About Maintenance and Spare Parts

Every piece of furniture eventually needs maintenance. Before buying, ask the supplier about spare part availability. Can you get a replacement hydraulic pump? A new seat cushion? An armrest cover?

Furniture from unknown brands or overseas imports often has no local spare part support. When something breaks, you end up replacing the entire unit instead of just the damaged part.

6. Not Thinking About Your Service Menu

Your furniture should match the services you offer. If you do a lot of hair coloring, you need chairs and capes that resist dye stains. If you offer facials and skin treatments, you need adjustable beds with proper recline. If you run a barbershop, you need heavy-duty chairs with headrest support.

Buy furniture that supports your specific services, not just generic salon pieces.

7. Buying Everything from Different Suppliers

Mixing and matching from multiple suppliers often results in a mismatched look. Different brands use different shades of black, different metal finishes, and different design styles. The result is a salon that looks pieced together rather than professionally designed.

Whenever possible, buy your core furniture — chairs, stations, and wash units — from the same supplier to maintain a consistent aesthetic.

8. Skipping the Warranty and After-Sales Check

Always ask about the warranty before purchasing. How long does it cover? What is included — just structural issues or upholstery too? Is there a service team available in your city?

A good warranty gives you peace of mind and protects your investment.

9. Not Planning for Growth

Many salon owners furnish their space for current needs without thinking about the future. If you plan to add more services, more stations, or more staff in the next couple of years, factor that into your furniture choices now. Modular and flexible furniture that can be rearranged or expanded is often a better choice than fixed, custom-built setups.
