In the year 1878, Archer Company from Saint Louis patented the first-ever reclining barber chair attached with a footrest. After a few modifications on design, the first-ever reclining and rotating chair by Archer was term as ‘Paragon’
Later by 1885, Theodore Koch from Chicago merged all those designs in his chairs and successfully sold over 35,000 chairs. In 1990, a Greek manufacturer invented a hydraulic-operated chair and patented ‘joystick’ side lever, allowing control over the mechanical functions.
In the 1950s, a Chicago-based company named Emil. J. Paidar was the leading barber chair manufacturers. It later became Belmont and American Barber Chair Company and ventured into Osaka in 1957. Japan’s Takara Belmont Company began to manufacture the replicas of Paidar chairs at 20% to 30% less cost that gained them recognition. By 1970, they had purchased Koken's name, trademarks, patents, and all the necessary equipment for establishing as a leading barber chair manufacturer. It resulted in Takara gaining 70% of the US market share, crossing the mark of Paidar’s market cover.
